Synopsis

Layla Dupree has given up on love.

She’s waded through all of the fish in the sea, each one more disappointing than the last. Apparently owning the bakery at Inglewild’s most romantic destination does not help one’s love life—despite her best efforts. All she wants is a partner who gives her butterflies, not someone who ghosts her at dinner and leaves her with the check.

Good thing Caleb Alvarez has the perfect solution.

After saving Layla from another date gone bad, he has a simple proposition: One month of no-strings dating. He’ll do his best to renew her faith in men while she rates his dating game. It’s a win-win situation. All the benefits of dating, without the added pressure of feelings and unmet expectations.

But there’s one ingredient they haven’t considered. The chemistry between them is red hot and the urge to take things to the next level is more tempting than Layla’s double fudge mocha brownies.

Will the heat between them boil over? Or will it be another case of mixed signals?

Mixed Signals is a sweet and steamy small-town romance. Our story features a bashful man who can rock a Hawaiian shirt, a hopeful and dreamy bakery owner, enough sweets to give you a cavity, and your favorite Inglewild residents. Mixed Signals is a standalone romance and the third book in the Lovelight series, a collection of interconnected novels.

Review

Mixed Signal is story of Layla and Caleb who turned out sweetest couple in this series. I was really excited to get Layla’s story ever since I started the series and I enjoyed knowing her more in this book.

Layla Dupree is the best baker of Inglewild. While her business is flourishing her dating life is disastrous. Seeing her friends Stella and Beckett happy in love and living at Lovelight Farm, Inglewild’s most romantic destination, doesn’t help with hopelessness she feels in love life.

When she was out of town on the date who soon ditched her, she meets Caleb in Hawaiian shirt who helps her with the ride back to town. Seeing her forlorn from series of dating disasters, Caleb offer solution to her dating problem- a one month experiment dating with him, in exchange Caleb gets a rating on his dating that will also help him be a better date.

It’s sure predictable they’re going to catch the feeling in this experiment, it was interesting to see how they accept those feelings and express it at the end of their trial.

I loved Caleb throughout the book. He is the sweetest guy with dimples and blushes. It was obvious to everyone he is into Layla who couldn’t notice his interest until they meets and fall into their experiment. I admired Caleb’s patience. He knew Layla so well and took once slow step at a time, making her feel comfortable and herself throughout their dating trial. I loved how he could lift her confidence and make her feel like she deserved the world and nothing less.

It was sad to see his vulnerable side. In fact, I was surprised the best thing in person- being generous, kind, and lovely- can be vulnerable thing too. I liked how he could he realized his nature is not the issue here and how Layla saw and fall for the same traits. It was amazing how he helped her on the day of magazine interview and saved the day for her.

Layla sure deserved the best. She is funny, smart, and lovely person. I never saw her family mentioned in previous books so it was interesting to read about them and it wasn’t a pretty picture. I felt for her reading how they treated her for being a baker and opening bakery in small town. Lack of appreciation from the family and idiots she chose to date chipped her confidence and self-worth. I loved how in the end she could overcome the fear of getting hurt and gave Caleb and herself a chance they deserved.

Romance was lovely and sunshiny with sizzling spicy chemistry. I loved how they fit so well with each other and there was none of the rule restriction thing that comes with fake dating. I also liked that their feeling wasn’t confused by the fake dating and it was Layla’s fear of getting hurt that caused the problem.

There were many lovely scenes in the book. I absolutely loved the dates Caleb planned in the first half and secondary characters. My most favorite moment was the day of the interview. I loved big cozy community of Inglewild, Layla’s friends, Caleb’s family… they all made the story even more lively and fun. and it was heartwarming to see them all come to help Layla on day of crisis.

My only issue here was they often got lost in their own head. All those monologues and also bedroom scenes sometime felt just kept going for a length. Or it might be just me. All i can say is I loved In The Weeds more than this.

Overall, Mixed Signals is sweet, fluffy, cozy, and enjoyable Friends to lovers, trial dating romance with found family vibe.

Favorite Quotes

“There may be plenty of fish in the sea, but most of those fish are bottom-dwellers with weird lanterns hanging off the front of their faces.”

“Why are you settling for crumbs when you deserve the whole damn cake?”

“You keep showing me pieces of yourself that I want to collect like seashells.”

“If you have slivers you’re protecting, that’s fine. But I think you need to consider how many slivers actually belong to you, and how many you’ve already given to Caleb. And trust that maybe your heart has finally found the right person to bet on.”

“That’s the trouble with falling in love. It’s a messy, ungrateful stumble into whirlwind of chaos. It doesn’t always feel good. It’s a fall.” …. “You just have to trust that the person you’re falling with is smart enough to catch you before you hurt anything important.”
