2024 Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag

Hello Readers! June is over and it’s time to reflect on the first half of the year. Despite my busy schedule with work, school, and blogging, I managed to squeeze in some reading time. While I didn’t get to read as many full novels as I usually do, I’m still satisfied with my progress this year. Check out some of my favorite and not so favorite, some surprising while some newly discovered books I read so far in this 2024 Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag-

2024 Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag

How is your reading going?

So far, I’m on track but that might be because I’m reading many Children’s books and MG books I get from publisher. I have to check how many full novel I have read so far. No DNF this year but with couple of books I came pretty close to DNF them. Will share them in disappointments.

Best book you’ve read so far in 2024.

I have one or two for each month so far but if I have to choose the best, these two were it. Both were epic fantasy while A Day of Fallen Night was slow to steady paced, The Final Empire was fast with many twists and turns. If I have to choose one of these I would go for Samantha Shannon as she balances world, magic, characters, plot and twists so well.

Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024.

I read sequels of total 4 series but these two I found the best so far. In the Weeds was heartwarming and lovely romance. Unlike readers of this series, I found this even better than the first book. The Well of

Favourite re-read.

None! I barely had time to read books on TBR that I got this year and last year and previous year and so on…. So no, I couldn’t reread my old favorites. I would go back to it when I find myself in slump.

Genre you’ve been loving/reading the most.

Romance and Children’s Fiction (age5-10) I’m reading most. I’m enjoying Fantasy and Romance the most. As I have picked long big fantasy this year, I have managed to read only 4 so far.

New release you haven’t read yet, but want to.

There are so many new releases I received from publishers but these two are on my immediate TBR.

Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.

I enjoyed The Sunbrearer Trials when it was released. I would like to see what happened next after that unexpected twist. I just read The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches and the author has become my favorite New to Me Author. I will love to read author’s next book that is releasing near the year end.

Biggest disappointment.

I did not enjoy these two at all. Some aspects in both books were good and that’s why I rated both 2.5. Craft was most because I didn’t get most of the stories in the collection while Pen Pal was filled with spicy scenes that didn’t make me feel anything.

Biggest surprise.

I didn’t like first book Behind The Net in Vancouver Storm series that much so I picked sequel The Fake Out with a little less expectation. It turned better than first book and there were many lovely moments between characters.

Surprise Pregnancy in Ready or Not turned out actually surprising. Friends to lovers are hit or miss for me but it worked really well in this book and I loved realistic portrayal of pregnancy and miscarriage.

Filled with heartfelt emotions and genuine moments of connection The Bump was another surprising read. I enjoyed the portrayal of gay partners’ journey to parenthood and and the bumps they feel on this road.

Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)

Alexa Martin – I read two books by author this year, The Next-Door Nemesis and Better Than Fiction, and I loved both of them.

Brandon Sanderson – Read first two books in Mistborn Saga and I’m reading third one now and this series is amazing so far. I could see why the author and his books are so popular.

Sidney Karger – As I mentioned, I enjoyed The Bump and I would love to read more books by the author.

Newest favourite character.

Wolf and Tunuva in A Day of Fallen Night
Beckett Porter in In the Weeds
Kelsier in The Final Empire

Book that made you cry.

None! I had happy tears with romance books I read and A Day of Fallen Night had some emotional scenes but I haven’t read a book that made me cry hard.

Book that made you happy.

Too many to list here! I read lots of romance and Children’s fiction so this feeling is very common in books I read.

Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received)

Love this set and I can’t wait to read this trilogy. I’m sure reading these as soon as I finish Mistborn.

What books do you need to read by the end of the year?

The list is endless but those Schwab books are definitely one of them. And if I manage to squeeze in one more series that will be Bone Season by Samantha Shannon.
