Synopsis

The magnificent third book in the New York Times bestselling Bone Season series, now updated with the author’s preferred text and a gorgeous new design.

Following a fierce battle for the Rose Crown, Paige Mahoney has risen to the dangerous position of Underqueen, ruling over the clairvoyant syndicate of London. But with vengeful enemies still at large, the task of stabilizing the fractured underworld has never seemed so challenging.

As Paige rallies her army of criminals, she continues to meet in secret with her former enemy, Arcturus Mesarthim. Should they be discovered, the fragile alliance with the Ranthen will fail.

But all bets are off when Scion introduces Senshield, a deadly technology that spells doom for clairvoyants. Now Paige must race against the clock to stop her reign ending in blood.

Review

The Song Rising begins in the immediate aftermath of the devastating events of The Mime Order, picking up right after the scrimmage and the shocking revelation of the human traitor who betrayed Ranthen. Paige is left reeling, not only from that betrayal but also from Jaxon Hall’s decision to switch sides, a choice that shakes the very foundations of everything she believed.

Now the Underqueen of London’s criminal underworld, Paige is determined to unite the clairvoyant syndicates into a single force, the Mime Order, and wage war against both Scion and the Rephaim. Yet the task proves far more difficult than she anticipated.

The gangs she hopes to unite have spent years fighting one another. Many view her as a traitor, refuse to acknowledge her authority, and believe Jax should have inherited the position of Underlord. Her decision to show mercy toward Ivy only deepens the resentment surrounding her.

However, consolidating the syndicates is only the beginning of her troubles.

A far more dangerous threat is emerging across London. Senshields, which were not meant to become operational until the new year, have already appeared throughout the city. Worse still, they can detect clairvoyants of the first three orders, making syndicate impossible to roam free.

At the same time, Scion summons its most feared military leader, Hildred Vance, to the capital with one objective: capture Paige Mahoney and eradicate the syndicates once and for all. Vance is every bit as terrifying as Nashira, perhaps even more so. Brilliant, ruthless, and endlessly calculating, she has orchestrated many of the incursions from the shadows and is now working toward an even more dangerous innovation: portable senshields.

Forced into hiding and struggling to keep the Mime Order alive, Paige realizes there is only one path forward. She must confront Vance, locate the core powering the senshield network, and destroy it before Scion tightens its grip beyond escape.

Samantha Shannon’s writing remains as captivating as ever. The pacing mirrors the previous books, unfolding at a slow to moderate rhythm, but the tension steadily tightens with every chapter.

The first half serves as a careful buildup, raising the stakes and pushing Paige toward a breaking point. Every setback, every loss, and every impossible choice slowly guides her toward a moment where she must abandon tradition, risk her position as Underqueen, and leave the safety of her allies behind.

That is when the novel truly ignites.

The second half transforms into a thrilling mission that takes readers far beyond London and into other Scion-controlled territories. The search for the senshield core is packed with danger, political intrigue, impossible odds, and some of the most exciting moments in the series so far. It expands the scope of the story in ways that feel both ambitious and deeply rewarding.

Once again, author proves herself exceptional at world-building. With each installment, the world grows larger and more complex. Here, we witness the devastating realities of life under Scion’s rule. We see how different countries and territories have adapted, resisted, or suffered beneath its oppression. We learn how clairvoyant communities survive beyond London, how underground networks operate, and how resistance movements begin to form.

The Song Rising also explores the origins of Nick and Maria’s story, revealing how their actions helped spark a revolution that extends far beyond the city. Combined with the intricate politics, military strategies, technological advancements, and social structures the world comes alive.

As a protagonist, Paige has already undergone significant growth so far in the series, both as a person and as a dreamwalker. Rather than focusing on dramatic new development, this book examines how she responds when pushed to her limits. We see her vulnerability, frustration, fear, determination, and resilience in equal measure.

Whether she is making decisions for the good of her people or navigating the complexities of her relationship with Warden, everything ultimately stems from her unwavering desire to protect others and challenge the system that seeks to destroy them.

One aspect I particularly loved was the way Paige handled her feelings for Warden. Rather than allowing them to become a weakness, she transforms them into a source of strength. Their relationship remains one of the highlights of the series.

The longing, uncertainty, and emotional tension between them were exquisite. At times, the romantic angst tested my patience more than the slow-burning plot itself. Yet what made it so compelling was the maturity with which both characters approached their feelings. Their choices were not always easy, and some of them were heartbreaking, but they felt honest and deeply human.

Nick and Eliza continue to prove themselves invaluable friends, but Maria completely stole the show for me. She was fierce, hilarious, and endlessly entertaining. Every scene she appeared in felt brighter because of her presence. Bringing her along on the mission to destroy the senshield core was one of Paige’s smartest decisions.

I found myself appreciating Warden and his allies far more in this installment, particularly during the final third of the novel, where their role becomes increasingly important.

As for the villains, Hildred Vance is a fascinating addition to the series. She is intelligent, enigmatic, and terrifyingly competent. Even after spending so much time with her, there remains an air of mystery surrounding her character. We learn pieces of her history, including her rise through Scion’s ranks and her reputation for devastating wartime tactics, but there is still much left undiscovered.

Meanwhile, the return of Jax and Nashira creates some of the book’s most memorable moments. Their interactions with Paige gave me chills.

And then there is the final section of The Song Rising. Just like the previous books, the last hundred pages are absolutely phenomenal. Paige finds herself trapped in circumstances that seem utterly hopeless. The physical and emotional torment she endures is harrowing to read.

There were moments when I genuinely believed she would not survive, moments when it felt impossible that she could destroy the core or escape with anything left of herself intact. The tension is relentless, the emotional impact devastating.

Yet amid all the darkness, the novel plants countless seeds for what comes next. New questions emerge, old mysteries deepen, and revelations hint at an even larger story waiting beyond the horizon. Without venturing into spoiler territory, I will simply say that the ending left me heartbroken, emotionally exhausted, and desperately hopeful all at once.

Overall, The Song Rising is a dark, gripping, and emotionally powerful dystopian fantasy. It explores betrayal, manipulation, trauma, PTSD, resistance, sacrifice, and the horrors of living under an oppressive regime. With its expansive world-building, unforgettable characters, and breathtaking final act, it stands as one of the strongest installments in the series so far.
