Synopsis

A visitor mistakes Ritu’s bird call for an ostrich’s and wants to see the bird.
But there are no ostriches on Henry Island!
where will Ritu find one to show him?

Review

Ostrich Girl is enjoyable and lovely story of a girl, Ritu, living on Henry Island known for its bird population but after pandemic, struggle with lack of tourists and so economy islanders supported poaching and bird trading. The island is now facing disappearance of native birds. To attract tourist back, manager of local guest house recruited the children of island to mimic bird calls.

Despite many efforts Ritu cannot mimic a single bird call and when she finally tried, a tourist boy recognized it as Ostrich call. But there have never been an ostrich on the island and now boy and manger of the guest house wants Ritu help him find one for him.

Ostrich girl is fun story but there are many serious and important topics to discuss with young readers. There is message of consequences poaching and hunting on nature and importance of animal rights. The story shows dwindling connection of humans with nature. The story also highlights scam some people run in name of tourism.

I’m a person who always feed strays and put grain out for birds so it hurt to see people hunting and hurting nature to fill their pockets. But I also loved how author also highlighted poor condition of islanders because of pandemic and how it made them desperate to earn and feed their family. It was great to see how kid turning out hero of the story making other kids and their family realize how they could turn the situation and earn more by saving the birds.

For kids the solution in the end seems better but me reading the book as an adult could see the it’s pretty simple and it cannot be that easy to turn things around and people don’t change easily but I’m happy this bring forth the awareness and brilliantly convey the important message along with lovely art and illustrations.

Overall, Ostrich girl amazing and lovely children’s fiction about wildlife conservation that all kids will enjoy.
