Review
Too Good to Be True is a contemporary romance that follows Avni, a perfectly introverted, bookish girl who is a little too in love with romance novels. Alongside studying law, she works part-time at her friendโs parentsโ bookstore, living a quiet life with a small, close-knit group of friends. Everything is going just fine until Aman walks in, tall, handsome, successful, and unreal in the way fictional men usually are.
To Avni, he feels flawless. And that is exactly the problem.
She is not ready for a relationship, and more than that, she cannot shake the feeling that if something looks this perfect, it has to fall apart. Aman, on the other hand, knows almost instantly that Avni is the one for him. But he can also sense that she is holding back. No matter how much time they spend together, she remains difficult to read, like a story with missing pages.
What kept me going was the mystery around Avni. Why is she so guarded? What happened in her past that made her distrust relationships so deeply? Why does she keep waiting for something to go wrong when Aman is consistently kind and patient? For a good part of the book, these questions genuinely hook you in. You want answers. You expect a payoff.
But then comes the frustration.
The writing is engaging, the pacing is quick, and the characters are interesting on the surface, yet the story itself did not fully land for me. That curiosity slowly turned into irritation because we are kept in the dark for too long. And when the truth finally comes out in the climax, instead of feeling emotional or satisfying, it made me want to shake Avni and ask what exactly she was doing all this time.
Aman, for most of the book, is practically perfect. He is 30, mature, respectful, financially secure, and emotionally aware. He understands that Avni needs time and tries his best to move at her pace. But at the same time, he is stuck walking on eggshells, constantly unsure of how she will react or whether he is pushing too much or too little.
He is clearly the more grounded one in the relationship. And honestly, when he finally reaches his breaking point in the climax, I did not blame him at all. If anything, it felt overdue. Wanting clarity after being in a relationship for over six months is not unreasonable. What I appreciated, though, is that even after everything, he understands what Avni needs and gives her the space to heal.
Avni, on the other hand, really tested my patience. She is 23, and it shows. Yes, she has gone through a lot, and her trauma is valid, but the problem is that we do not get access to any of it until very late in the story. Until then, her behavior just feels confusing and, at times, unnecessarily frustrating.
She is able to open up to her friends, people she has known for a relatively shorter time, but completely shuts Aman out, even when their relationship is clearly deeper and more serious. Every time he tries to define what they are or take a step forward, she either freezes, overreacts, or pushes him away.
What stood out to me was how she kept doubting Aman simply because he was too good. Most stories focus on whether the guy is serious or trustworthy, but here she is stuck questioning why he is so perfect, as if that itself is suspicious.
There is even a moment where Aman asks if she would prefer him to have flaws just so she could feel more comfortable, and I had to laugh because that was exactly what I had been thinking the entire time.
And then she pulls the classic โif you love me, let me go,โ which honestly just made me roll my eyes.
Her reasoning for not trusting relationships did not feel strong enough to justify the level of emotional distance she maintained. It takes her three months of therapy to finally come to terms with things, and while I did like that arc for her, it also made me wish we had seen more of that growth earlier.
The ending, unfortunately, felt rushed. We do not really get to see what Aman was going through during those months when Avni was dealing with her grief and therapy. There is also a conflict involving his brother that does not get the depth or resolution it deserved. It all wraps up a little too quickly for something that had been building for so long.
I listened to the audiobook, narrated by the author herself, and that was definitely a highlight. Her voice is bright, warm, and matches Avniโs personality perfectly, which made the listening experience really enjoyable even when the story itself was frustrating.
Overall, Too Good to Be True is a light, entertaining contemporary romance with layers of grief, loss, and trust issues. It had an interesting premise and enough intrigue to keep me listening, but the emotional payoff and character choices did not fully work for me.
