Synopsis
Something has scared Bapu in the bathroom. Can Diya save him?
Review
What Could It Be is lovely children’s fiction that follows Diya who is on mission to find out what her father saw in bathroom that scared him.
From page one, author hooks you with Diya’s boundless curiosity. She quizzes her school bus driver, her best friend, and anyone else who’ll listen, conjuring up imaginings so vivid you half-expect a toilet-paper-tent to spring to life in your own bathroom. Wild theories—ranging from demons eating sweets, witches casting spells, and ghosts having party —are hilarious, heartfelt, and completely authentic to the way kids’ minds work.
When the big reveal finally drops, it’s delightfully unexpected (at least for kids). Despite being scared, Diya chooses to help her father instead of running away and how she decided to act and what she learns from it really stood out. Diya proves that courage isn’t about swinging a broom at every creepy-crawly; it’s about empathy, respect, and sometimes simply stepping back to realize the “monster” might just be… well, not so monstrous after all.
It also hit close to home because my own child is a lot like Diya. Her first instinct when she doesn’t like something—especially bugs or animal—is to throw something, hit, or squash it. This story opened the door for a really important conversation. I was able to explain to my kid that just because something scares you or makes you uncomfortable doesn’t mean it’s dangerous or deserves harm (mosquitoes are the only exception—we’ve agreed those are fair game!).
The story beautifully conveys that every life matters, and if a creature isn’t hurting you, you can simply leave it alone. It’s a gentle, relatable way to introduce kids to empathy and respect for all living things.
Illustrations deserve a standing ovation of their own. Bold colors practically leap off every page, and the bed-sheet tent on the cover was an instant hit at our house—proof that great art can spark as much imagination as the text itself.
Overall, What Could It Be? is a lovely children’s fiction with a perfect blend of humor and heart in pint-sized form. It’s the kind of book that will have both kids and grown-ups chuckling, mulling over their own bathroom “monsters,” and maybe—just maybe—treating the next creepy-crawly they meet with a little more kindness.

Your description reminds me of old books I used have around, children’s books full of messages that make you feel cozy. Reminds me I should maybe go back and read a few children’s books again in this crazy world. Awesome review!
