Synopsis
He’d never wanted anyone enough to chase them…until he met her.
Charming, easygoing, and rich beyond belief, Xavier Castillo has the world at his fingertips.
He also has no interest in taking over his family’s empire (much to his father’s chagrin), but that hasn’t stopped women from throwing themselves at him…unless the woman in question is his publicist.
Nothing brings him more joy than riling her up, but when a tragedy forces them closer than ever, he must grapple with the uncertainty of his future—and the realization that the only person immune to his charms is the only one he truly wants.
***
Cool, intelligent, and ambitious, Sloane Kensington is a high-powered publicist who’s used to dealing with difficult clients.
However, none infuriate—or tempt—her more than a certain billionaire heir, with his stupid dimples and laid-back attitude.
She may be forced to work with him, but she’ll never fall for him…no matter how fast he makes her heart beat or how thoughtful he is beneath his party persona.
He’s her client, and that’s all he’ll ever be. Right?
Review
King of Sloth is a sizzling slow-burn romance that follows the compelling story of Sloane and Xavier.
Xavier is the heir to the Castilo Group, a global beer empire, but years of strained, dysfunctional dynamics with his father have turned him into a reckless playboy—wasting his fortune and partying his way into headlines. He’s never chased anything in life… until Sloane. When a vacation deal brings them closer, Xavier finally gets to see the woman behind the guarded, iron-clad facade. And when tragedy strikes, it binds them in ways neither of them expected.
Sloane has been Xavier’s publicist for the past three years. He’s her second most difficult client, but she’s always seen the potential behind the chaos: a smart, sharp man with a good heart, if only he’d focus his energy in right things. It’s only during their trip, and especially after meeting his family during his father’s final days, that she truly understands what shaped him. She’s been burned before—betrayed and chose to walk away from her family—so love isn’t something she believes in. But Xavier’s presence is slowly breaking through her emotional armor.
It was interesting to see if she will give Xavier a real chance, will she let her guard down and give love chance? It was also interesting to see if Xavier can fulfill his father’s will and get his inheritance.
I’ve loved Sloane since the beginning of this series. She’s sharp, kickass, and no-nonsense, hiding behind her “Ice Queen” image to keep the world at bay. This book finally peeled back those layers, revealing a heartbreaking past I never saw coming. Her family is even more dysfunctional than Xavier’s—something I didn’t think was possible!
I was furious on her behalf at how she was betrayed and then told to “let it go or leave”—and I admired her even more for choosing the latter, building her career from scratch to become one of the top publicists in the game. Still, her love for her stepsister was heartwarming, and their bond added a softer layer to her character.
At times, Sloane was frustrating—her emotional walls were so rigid it made her hard to reach—but her strength and independence made her incredibly real. She had to come to the realization about her feelings for Xavier on her own, which made her eventual choice that much more satisfying.
Her job passion was infectious, and I loved how she handled toxic people—especially her ex and her sister. Those scenes were among my favorites! Also, her obsession with rom-coms and the hilarious, creatively hateful reviews she wrote? Absolute gold. I couldn’t believe someone who devours that many rom-coms didn’t believe in love deep down.
Xavier, too, was more than his hedonistic surface. The death of his mother at age 11 shattered him, creating a rift between him and his father that shaped his rebellious, aimless adult life. His hatred for his father’s cold treatment was justified, and though the emotional closure never came, the impact of the death, letter, and will was powerful.
For the first time, Xavier finds something he’s truly passionate about. His growth arc felt a bit fast—29 years of chaos turned around in six months—but it was believable because of the emotional weight behind it. I loved every step of his transformation.
The romance itself was beautifully slow-burn. It surprised me that it took them three years to reach that point of unavoidable electric sexual tension, but once they did, the chemistry sizzled, and I liked how they took time with it by trying dating. Their dates were just so lovely. I really enjoyed how they brought out the best in each other.
The climax threw me for a loop. I expected something involving the club, but not at that level—and certainly not for the reasons hinted at here (which still aren’t fully revealed). The third-act fallout was somewhat predictable, but still well-executed. I appreciated how Xavier was nudged in the right direction, how he challenged Sloane’s walls, and how she finally chose to open her heart. The resolution with the blogger, Carolina, and her stepsister Pen was deeply satisfying. The ending? Perfectly wrapped up.
I absolutely can’t wait for Vuk and Anaya’s story. I have a feeling that one’s going to be a little darker, and I am so ready for it.
Overall, King of Sloth is a delightful, sexy, and emotionally rich addition to the series, with sharp banter, slow-burn romance, and layered main characters, it’s impossible not to root for Sloane and Xavier.
