MONTHLY WRAP-UP : August 2020
Hello readers! I hope August was amazing month for you. This month a lot happened. We decided to move to our hometown and buy our own house, and sleeping schedule was worst (all thanks to my daughter) but I watched Netflix A LOT . I watched Lucifer (season 3,4,5), Cursed (season 1) and Shdowhunters (all seasons). I didn’t plan to watch shadowhunters and thought I would read 2 more books before month end but then throat infection happened. I was worried I might not get well before our flight on 5th and wanted to rest plus I was feeling lazy because of meds with no mood to read anything. But thankfully I’m feeling better now and I’m back from my unexpected break from reading and blogging. Here is what I read in August-

As Luck Would Have It by Zoe May — [Review] ★★★★ / / Chick-Lit / / It was about letting go of past, second chance at love, enjoying life and taking risk at chance of love and happiness. / / I enjoyed first half of the book. It was fun, fast paced and entertaining. Natalie had refreshing voice. Second half was all about Marrakech, their 5 days together and fake relationship along with knowing each other more worked like charm. This part was a bit slow but I loved beautiful description of Marrakech.
Bound to You (The Demon Knights Series, #1) by Alyson Caraway — [Review] ★★★★ / / Paranormal Fantasy / / It was about manipulation, betrayal, guilt, regrets, and love. / / I liked reading rules of heaven and hell and seeing it from characters’ perspective. It was fascinating, action packed, quick paranormal romance with enemy to lover trope, interesting characters, and mystery.
This Was a Man (The Clifton Chronicles, #7) by Jeffrey Archer — [Review] ★★★★★ / / Historical Fiction / / excellent last book of the series that revolved around Cliftons and Barrigtons’ life. It was about family and professional drama, secrets, scheming, life challenge, and good vs bad. / / All of characters were realistic and relatable. There were many shocking and surprising events and clever twist and turns with some memorable and entertaining scenes. Historical events of fall of Berlin wall was mesmerising to read.
The Night Swim by Megan Goldin — [Review] ★★★★★ / / Mystery, Thriller / / It was about judicial system, rape and sexual assault, views of people and prejudice. / / This was amazing, atmospheric thriller with heavy and hard subject. I loved writing and the way story was told through podcast chapter, letter and investigation. I enjoyed this more than The Escape Room by Megan Goldin.
Little Beach Street Bakery (Little Beach Street Bakery #1) by Jenny Colgan — [Review] ★★★★★ / / chick-lit / / It was about being free from burden and rat race, following bliss and happiness, belongingness, friendship, and love. / / This was lovely, feel good chick-lit. I loved setting of Mount Polvearne, Polly’s Beach Street Bakery and her breads. Characters were likable and realistic and best thing in this book was Neil- the puffin.
The Marriage Game by Sara Desai — [Review] ★★★★ / / Romance, chick-lit / / It was about burden of guilt, coping with loss, desire for requite and its consequences, family, community, Indian culture and cuisine, and love. / / fun and entertaining Bollywood style romance with interesting characters. I liked Indian culture in book and I enjoyed banter between Layla and Sam over office and during dates. If you enjoy good banter romance I recommend this.
The Last Charm by Ella Allbright — [Review] ★★★★ / / Women’s Fiction / / It was about domestic abuse, abandonment issue, mental health, trust issue, relationships, family, hopes, fears, dreams, loss, grief, and forgiveness. / / This was bittersweet story of Leila and Jack. I loved the way it was told, not in flashbacks but Leila writing an email to Caitlin who found her charm bracelet recounting the story behind each charm, her and Jack’s story to convince her the bracelet was hers so she could finish the birthday treasure hunt Jack created, find the last charm and add it to bracelet. Everything was perfect in book except Leila, she was so frustrating, her development was too slow and late in book but still I enjoyed the story mostly because of Jack.
The Last Train to Key West by Chanel Cleeton — [Review] ★★★★★ / / Historical Fiction / / It was about effect of great depression on people’s life, horrible condition of WWI veterans in Key West camps, greatest hurricane of history, domestic violence, survival, courage, and love. / / I enjoyed story of three women and their path intersecting in Key West. I enjoyed reading story of these women and how their life changed. Historical aspect of 1935 Labor Day hurricane, Flagler’s train track and its destruction this hurricane, condition of WW I veterans, and government’s failure in taking care of these war hero was best and my favourite part in this book.
Rodrick Rules (Diary of a Wimpy Kid, #2) by Jeff Kinney (review later) / / Middle Grade / / This was fun. I enjoyed this but not as much as first book. I liked Greg’s middle child problem and his relationship with his friends, parents and both siblings. Many can relate to Greg in this book.
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas (review will be up on 4th) / / YA, LGBTQ Paranormal Romance / / heart-warming, entertaining, and impressive debut novel. I had to google a lot in first few chapters as I didn’t know much about Latinx culture, food and tradition and book filled with Latinx culture, history, and mythology. I enjoyed reading about Brujx community, descriptions of all ceremonies, and Dia de Muertos festival. I watched Coco a last year and it helped in imagining the festival, all preparations and decorations. Everything about this was good but it didn’t blow my mind away, I felt something was missing and it was little predictable.

It’s great once one finds right series or movie to watch. You will like Lucifer. There is one mystery per episode plus some drama.
