Review

Zooni’s Alarm Clock is a heartwarming tale rooted in Kashmiri tradition, following a little girl named Zooni and her family.

Her grandfather, a Ramazan drummer, walks through the streets at dawn to wake people for seher. A day before Ramadan begins, he discovers his drum is broken, casting a gloom over the household. Determined to help, Zooni comes up with a clever idea that might just work.

I loved getting to know Zooni, her rambunctious brother, and their family dynamics—especially how she deeply respects her grandfather’s work, even though he isn’t paid for it and her father disapproves. Her problem-solving skills, combined with her brother’s beatboxing, make for a delightful and inventive solution.

It was also touching to see the entire community come together to support her grandfather, showing their gratitude for his role.

The author beautifully highlights culture, community strength, and creative thinking. The illustrations are just as lovely as the story itself, enhancing its warmth and message.

Overall, Zooni’s Alarm Clock is a charming and inspiring tale based on Kashmiri tradition that represent resilience and the power of community.
