Synopsis
The spellbinding new cosy fantasy from Sunday Times bestseller Lucy Jane Wood.
Practically perfect, in every witch way…
From the Sunday Times bestselling author of Rewitched…
Annie Wildwood is practically perfect in every witch way. Her life is a haze of pink, magic and impossibly high standards. But, when she is tasked with mentoring a troubled teenage witch with extraordinary powers, Annie’s charmed existence is quickly thrown into utter chaos…
Set in the same enchanting world as Rewitched, Uncharmed celebrates found family, unconditional love and the joy of swapping perfectionism and people-pleasing for being your true magical self.
Review
This book felt like a love letter to autumn with rich, cozy, golden details that’ll make any autumn lover swoon. From the aroma of baked treats wafting through the opening bakery scenes to the later move into a woodland cottage, the atmosphere was pure, cinnamon-scented perfection.
Despite the gorgeously cozy setup, the story took a little time to pull me in, mostly because of Annie. She’s a people-pleaser to her core, desperate to belong to the Sorciety, an elite circle of witches and warlocks. To fit in, she relies on her perfection spell, rigid routines, and an almost comical obsession with the color pink. It’s clear she’s kind and well-meaning, but early on, her need for approval makes her hard to root for.
Things shift the moment Maeve enters the picture. When Annie takes on mentoring this fiery 15-year-old witch with wild, uncontrollable magic, she expects a meek apprentice. Instead, Maeve is everything Annie isn’t- confident, impulsive, unapologetically herself, and guided by emotion rather than rules.
A single outburst of Maeve’s power turns their world upside down, sending both of them from the bustling streets of London to Arden Place, a secluded cottage deep in the forest. What follows is part magical mentorship, part emotional reckoning, as Annie struggles to teach Maeve control while discovering how little control she has over her own life.
Lucy Jane Wood’s writing remains as enchanting and heartwarming as it was in Rewitched. What starts as a cozy, whimsical tale soon deepens into something darker, full of danger, power struggles, and high-stakes magical tension. Beneath the spellwork and worldbuilding lies the real heart of the story that is- character growth, found family, and learning to value authenticity over perfection.
The Sorciety and its covens add a delicious layer of manipulation and moral rot , a reflection of how perfection and power often go hand in hand with corruption. These themes are handled beautifully, with the story’s focus always circling back to love, belonging, and self-worth.
Fans of Rewitched will enjoy the familiar threads woven here. Since Uncharmed takes place before Rewitched, we see a softer side of Morena that adds nuance to her character. It’s satisfying to understand her actions later in the timeline, and now I can’t help but hope for her redemption arc if author decides to write next book in this series.
As for Annie, she’s not an easy character to love right away, but she’s easy to understand. Her backstory with her strained family past, her desperate need to belong makes her people-pleasing nature both heartbreaking and believable. It’s frustrating watching her twist herself to fit into a society that clearly doesn’t value her, but that frustration is part of what makes her eventual growth so rewarding.
Her journey from perfection-obsessed necromancer to someone who embraces imperfection and vulnerability is slow, painful, and beautifully written. Undoing her perfection spell becomes a literal and emotional act of liberation that was made possible by Maeve’s raw honesty and a certain grumpy warlock’s quiet understanding.
Maeve, on the other hand, absolutely stole my heart. She’s brimming with power and attitude, whip-smart and unfiltered, and though her magic is unpredictable, her heart is steadfast. She’s been failed by adults her whole life, and all she really wants is a place and a person to call home. Watching her find that with Annie is pure magic.
And then there’s Hal- the broody, kind-hearted owner of Arden Place who loves animals more than people. His gruff patience and understated charm make him the perfect grounding presence for both Annie and Maeve. The three of them form an unlikely but utterly heartwarming trio: Annie, the sweet pink perfectionist; Maeve, the sharp-tongued gothic prodigy; and Hal, the calm center that ties them together.
While there’s a touch of romance between Annie and Hal, it never overshadows the main story. The heart of Uncharmed lies in relationship between Annie and Maeve that was of mentorship, friendship, and self-discovery.
The climax delivers a satisfying emotional punch as Annie finally opens her eyes to the toxic underbelly of the Sorciety. The truth she uncovers about their corruption makes her return to Arden Place and her chosen family. Everything happened after that was blur of discovering Sorciety’s secrets and crimes, danger, and action. The end was satisfying and uplifting.
Overall, Uncharmed is a cozy, heartwarming, and spellbinding witchy contemporary / Cozy Fantasy brimming with charm, lush autumnal atmosphere, and characters who’ll linger in your mind long after the final page. It’s about finding your magic not in perfection, but in being unapologetically yourself.
