Synopsis

Ride along on this endearing road-trip rom-com from Audie Award nominee Cara Bastone – scripted exclusively for audio!

I have exactly 5 hours and 10 minutes to get from Boston to New York City or the professional opportunity of a lifetime disappears. My only travel option? The second to last seat on a discount bus. Across from the bathroom. Wearing last night’s clothes (don’t ask). All worth it if I can make it in time.

My nerves almost get the best of me, but then there he is, sitting down in the seat next to me. Tall. Friendly smile. Bright indigo streak in his brown hair. The perfect distraction. Turns out he’s on his way to reconnect with an old flame. The one who got away. We can both make it on time – just barely – if the traffic keeps flowing.

Playing road-trip games, avoiding calls from his mother, and effortless conversation keeps us from clockwatching…until the bus breaks down. And my seatmate turns into my copilot as we wrangle a ride in a car three decades old. And hit all the traffic. And oh, Lord, the detours. And somehow I end up careening cross-town on the handlebars of a Citi Bike carrying a box of kittens. (Yeah, don’t ask.)

He’s my hero every step of the way…and I might be falling for him. But what happens when we reach our final destination? Could my seatmate really be my soul mate?

Review

fluffy, and lovely road trip romance

Seatmate is fluffy and fun romance that revolves around Gwen and her handsome seatmate Sam, traveling from Boston to NY, getting to know each other, and becoming more than just friends during their 5 hrs journey. The story is about love, friendship, family, and learning to try new things and taking chance.

There isn’t much to say that is not already said in synopsis. I liked little info on how they exactly found the worst possible seat on bus, across the bathroom, and unlike their nature, they both feel compelled to talk to each other, start getting to know each other more, why Gwen want to reach NY in time, what’s the big work opportunity she is getting, and how Sam travels this route almost every month to meet his mother as she is only family. It was interesting to see what roadblocks they will have and if Gwen can reach NY in time and how Sam will help with it.

Both characters are lovely. Sam is handsome, caring, homebody, friendly, and pleasant person. He at first sounded like mama’s boy with so many texts and calls he received from her and she set up dates for him that he couldn’t get out of making him the awkward date. Like Sherley said he sounded like a filial son but as we get to know him more and see it from his and Gwen’s perspective, all those things and mother-son bond felt lovely and so strong. I loved him even more for being genuinely nice guy and helping Gwen without much expectation.

Gwen is more intersting. I liked her thoughts about her own family and how different it is from Sam’s bond with his mother. I felt for her when she talked about why she isn’t close to her family. Her passion for her work, travel job and blog is infectious. It makes her who she is. Her dilemma with ever increasing crush for Sam and why it couldn’t possibly work between them is realistic and I loved how she realized not just that she can make it work and give it a chance but also more about how she too can change her lifestyle without changing what makes her who she is which is the main take away from the book.

Romance is fluffy. In fact there isn’t the usual romance as this takes place in few hrs, they are constantly on the journey and they are in that ‘getting to know each other’ phase but there is some moments between them that make their chemistry lovely and cute.

Best part of this is a full cast of narrators and they did an amazing job. There is sounds at all appropriate places like chatters in bus, honking, breaks, car passing, snorting, laughing, sighing, gasping. I have to say it’s kind of audiobook that might make you fall in love with audiobooks. As characters are given different voices, there isn’t he said, she said in conversations which I liked most. There are intermittent chapters that solely gives the perspective of main characters which gives clear insight on what character is feeling outside the conversations.

I liked how many times they have to change their mode of transportation. Detours, deadline and race with Gwen’s rival to reach NY…. made it more fun. Climax is as I expected. I enjoyed Gwen’s interview and how that changed her more than she has expected. End is lovely and feel good.

Why 4 stars-

There isn’t as many big roadblock as I was expecting and it’s predictable.

Overall, Seatmate is enjoyable, cozy, cute, fluffy and lovely road trip romance.

I recommend this if you like,
Light romance
Clean romance
Cute story
Story taking place in few hrs
road trip fiction
No drama
Main character is travel blogger
