Pride Month Book Recommendations

Hello readers! I might be late for this but I was thinking to write this Pride Month Book Recommendations post since the beginning of the month and then I signed up for Blogchatter Half Marathon so I waited to publish this post until today to make it count for challenge as well.

Here is list of 10 LGBTQ books I read so far, enjoyed them and I highly recommend in no particular order

Pride Month Book Recommendations : 10 LGBTQ+ books I recommend

Freak by Erin Lee

Trigger warnings- suicide, bullies, and crime

This was my first LGBTQ book I read. It was really beautiful, poignant and emotive story of Sam who was gay, bullied for being brave enough to show her true colours to the world and committed suicide who now was watching her family seeing the aftermath of her suicide. It was divided in part, each titled with different colours and telling the story of Sam and her family. The book is mainly about LGBTQ teens. Their struggle with gender identity or as gay, bisexual or asexual; their fight against bullies and for acceptance in the world and even by family that doesn’t understand ‘different’ word; their feeling of loneliness and unsupported speaks the volume which leads to suicidal tendencies.

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

This was lovely, heartwarming, refreshing, and the best contemporary romance and LGBT book I ever read.  that revolved around relationship between two high school boys in Mormon town. It was about finding and accepting true self, being you and loving yourself the way you are, family relationship, Mormonism, views on bisexuals and gays and their feelings. I loved romance and chemistry between Tanner and Sebastian.

The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen

YA graphic novel The Magic Fish

This was amazing coming of age LGBTQ graphic novel revolved around Vietnamese-American middle grade kid and his mother. I loved Tiến main character, who didn’t know how to come out to his Vietnamese parents who didn’t understand English much and didn’t know Vietnamese word to express his feelings. It was realistic and touching. I felt for him for what happened to him and how he had to face teacher’s homophobia. It was It was awe-inspiring story interwoven with three fairy tales– the German Allerleirauh, Vietnamese Tam Cam (2 relative Cinderella tales), and Little Mermaid.

I Think I Love You by Auriane Desombre

I think I Love You - YA romance

I Think I Love You was lovely YA Romance that revolved around two gay girls, Emma and Sophia whose views for romance are totally opposite but working on movie for contest made them see each other through different lens. The story was about bisexual representation, coming out to parents- what big deal it can be, teenage angst, family, trust, betrayal, friendship, and romance. Best part of the book was friendship, bisexual representation and F/F romance.

A Universe of Wishes: A We Need Diverse Books Anthology

A Universe of Wishes was fantastic collection of 15 YA, LGBTQ, fantasy, sci-fi, own voice, and diverse stories that covered many themes and layers with mind-blowing different worlds that I enjoyed diving into. All authors described world and characters of their story impeccably. There was so much in each story and at the end of each one I wished it was full novel and didn’t just end there.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

This was one of my most favourite book in 2020. It was fantastic high fantasy that revolved around the world fearing the big bad dragon that was stirring from his thousand years long sleep to bring chaos and destruction in the world and characters trying to save the world from him. Why I’m including this book here- F/F Romance. With 800 pages there was lot going on here but romance was really great to read.

Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust

This was amazing fantasy inspired by Persian mythology that revolved around cursed princess’s story trying to free herself from her curse. Another fantasy with a good f/f romance. It was for a short while but worked as breather in this tense and fast paced plot.

Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Cemetery Boys was YA paranormal that revolved around a cemetery boy, Yadriel and a ghost boy Julian. It was about Latinx culture, traditions, importance of evolution in tradition with time, gender recognition, struggles of transgenders, acceptance, friendship, and love. Own voice depiction was great in this. Author included all small things and struggles trans face in the book.

Shadowhunters by Cassandra Clare

I need to reread this series and write review here on my blog as well. This is one of my favourite series and M/M relationship between Magnus and Alec was really amazing through out the series. Though it wasn’t main focus of the book but it’s one of my favourite OTP (One True Pairing) and it definitely should be on this list.
