Star in the Shadows by Helen Buckley
Publication Date: 30th October 2019
Genre: Contemporary women’s fiction / romance

The world thinks that pop superstar Kiara Anderson has it all, but she spends her nights drinking away memories of her childhood and life as a teen runaway.

The Jacobs family are desperate to see the girl next door again and discover why she ran away, especially their son Shane, who blames himself for her disappearance.

When Kiara’s manager forces her into a reveal-all TV interview she knows the family she loved more than her own will finally discover the truth.

Can she overcome her demons or will the shadows of the past rob her of fame, fortune, and a chance to finally fall in love?

In this extract, the main character Kiara is late for rehearsals with the girl group she’s part of.

“What the hell is wrong with you?” screamed Megan, as Kiara opened the door to the dance studio and stumbled inside, two hours late for rehearsals.

Sierra, Michelle and Alicia stood stone-faced and silent as she walked towards them, clutching a bottle of water, pale-faced and sweaty.

“Um, sorry I overslept,” she muttered, putting a hand to her forehead. The room was hot, her vision blurry, and she sat on the wooden floor with her head between her legs.

Sierra glanced at Marco angrily. “Are you going to say something? She’s ruined nearly every performance this past week, and last month was a disaster too. We’re only able to cover it up so much and people are noticing.”

Kiara looked up and stared at them as they talked, but her vision was unfocused and her face expressionless and vacant. She was so tired. She woke up feeling so sick and in pain every morning that taking a shower made her nauseated, and only by drinking alcohol could she make the pain subside long enough to get dressed and make it down to rehearsal, aware that she could smell the vodka still emanating from every pore and so could everyone else that she worked with. She knew it was unprofessional and she hated letting the group down, but she had lost the energy to pretend that everything was okay.

Alicia walked over to Marco. “She needs help,” she said, folding her arms.

“She needs a fucking head doctor,” snapped Megan.

Marco walked to Kiara and stood in front of her, grabbing her arms and hauling her to her feet, heavy and uncoordinated. “Go back to bed,” he said, in disgust.
