‘You don’t know how significant you are. We need you.’

No matter where she is, Deirdre feels out of place. So when a cult known as the Center contacts her, wanting her join up, she’s intrigued. They say a terrible war is coming, humanity is in danger and without explaining why, say she’s needed for the fight. Suddenly the chance to be spectacular is within her grasp. With the charismatic Myra as the cult leader, and talk of prophecies and psychic abilities, Deirdre is soon seduced and ditches her humdrum life to join up.

Once inside, her understanding of the world shifts. She learns the truth about the elite, a secret organisation that has meddled with humanity since the beginning of time. The elite use entertainment and the media as a constant distraction to stop people from reaching their true potential. To free themselves of this conditioning, the followers must give up ‘excessive’ food and sleep. They also carry out increasingly bizarre rituals under the critical eye of the Captain, a minor leader of the new followers. He seems to take pleasure from turning them against one another.

Tensions increase. The followers gain odd new abilities, but bullying and hysteria also grow. Meanwhile Myra’s prophecies become increasingly extreme. As paranoia intensifies, Deirdre questions where the belief ends, and delusion begins.

The First Attack

Back at the dorm, she walked into a cozy scene. People sat on the beds and the floor, stretched out, cross-legged or back to back. They were chatting, meditating. It reminded Deirdre of when she had gone to Glastonbury as a teenager. That feeling of stepping away from urgency and duty, of wasting time any old how. Deirdre joined her friends on her bed. Cabbage sat at the end, facing away from Lilith, who explained,

‘We’re just testing our psychic ability.’

Deirdre looked at the collection of objects on the blanket: a book, a shoe, a phone.

‘See, I hold up an object and Cabbage has to guess what it is.’

‘I’m not guessing!’ he said. ‘I’m using my latent ability.’

Lilith held up a book. ‘And?’ she said.

‘Mug!’ said Cabbage. Lilith replied,

‘Liar!’ he said, thumping the blankets with mock fury.

‘Now?’ asked Lilith still holding the book.

Cabbage rubbed his head, then shook it.

‘Just your hand,’ said Cabbage.

‘No, try again!’ said Lilith. Deirdre wanted to be more a part of the game and started looking under her bed for items to use. She found a penny and a sweet wrapper and was just bringing them out when a sickness flooded through her stomach. Assuming it was only the memories stirred by the therapy session, she tried to grin the emotion away as she pulled out from under the bed. Cabbage was rubbing his head again, Lilith patted him on the back with the book.

‘No,’ Cabbage whispered.

‘Come on!’ said Lilith. Deirdre’s smile stretched into a grimace, as her stomach lurched again. Something is wrong! The sounds around her changed as if distorting. The happy rumble of voices was twisting into panic. Everything slowed as the air thickened. Around the dorm, panic was spreading like a gas. The laughter had stopped. Whispers and whines moved like the start of a storm, rustling the mood, rattling the calm. Lilith was still tapping Cabbage with the book, but her movements were mechanical, and when Cabbage swung round, she was close to tears.

‘There’s something in my head. Can you see it?’ he said, terror distorting his face as he swiped at his ears.
