Adventures in the wild

On a warm evening in the Seeonee hills, a family of wolves finds someone at the threshold of their cave–a human child, who knows nothing of the world of men. Adopted by Father Wolf, the man-cub Mowgli grows up with the pack in the Jungle.

Mowgli begins his journey and learns the law of the Jungle with the help of his new-found friends: Bagheera the wise Panther and lovable old Baloo. Together they face many dangers and adventures, as Mowgli comes face-to-face with Shere Khan the tiger and the Bandar-Log.

Embark on this adventurous journey with Mowgli, Rikki-tikki-tavi, Little Toomai and many others, as you read the enchanting ‘The Jungle Book’. As you go from one thrilling escapade to the other, let Kipling take you into a world of fantasy.

The Jungle Book was the first cartoon I remember watching on TV every Sunday when I was a kid. It was fascinating series. This was the cutest pocket edition that I bought recently that contains not only story of Mowgli but also Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, Toomai of the elephants, the White Seal and Her Majesty’s Servant. I never heard of other stories part from Mowgli’s. I didn’t know there were poems in the book and moreover it’s an anthology!

All Stories were written in old English and lyrical style with quirky characters and vivid description of nature, jungle, and sea that show the relations between human and animals. All poems were beautiful depicting the story itself.

Mowgli’s adventure in the jungle and his learning while he was small was great. He faced problems that no normal grown man could have. I enjoyed the rescue mission of Bagheera, Baloo and Ka. Bagheera-and Baloo’s tactic to convince Ka for fight was impressive. Cast out from the pack first and then by villagers was sad moment in the story but Mowgli took it with pride and Grace, he didn’t harbor ill will against them and I liked him for that. Behavior of men was no better than leaderless deceived wolves.

What surprised me more was the serious tone of the story which was contrary to movies and cartoon versions. They were fun to watch, and a bit of humor in it. Still I loved Mowgli’s adventure more than any other story in the book, it felt like I never heard of the story before.

My next favorite story was The White Seal. It was story of a seal called Kotick who was rebel and found his own peaceful island with no men and led all the seals to the safety. This story tells about the struggle and perseverance. Nothing is so difficult to achieve if put all the efforts in getting it and one needs to fight even after the achievement for the better good.

Rikki-Tikki-Tavi was also interesting story that I enjoyed about the bravery and loyalty of mongoose called Rikki-Tikki. The clever tricks of Rikki-Tikki and his valor will definitely amuse kids.

Her Majesty’s servant was most unusual and bit funny in the book. A men who could understand animal language and reading the story from his perspective made it interesting. Conversations between animals, their view towards their work and men was amusing to read. It was good story but not the best one.

Toomai of the Elephants was my least favorite story in the book. It was different, imaginative, and told lot about Elephants and their nature but something was missing. It didn’t impress me or hold interest when I was reading it. It was bit boring.

Overall, it was great Indian children’s classic with collection of poems and stories with quirky characters and old poetic writing. I prefer movie and cartoon adaptations more than the book.
